Day 16: Nuevalos - Santa Pola, 523 km

A long day. It is actually not the distance that takes it toll, but the time. I've said it before I think, but as I try to ride backroads, it does take some extra time. For the final leg before arriving at my parents, I did both. First some very nice a twisty little roads down to Teruel and then basically transport for 250 km. Last 80 km on dual carriageway was very much an exercise in stubborness.
Before that though, among others, a tour through Sierra de Albarracin. Starting out in a dense pine forrest some 1650 meters above sea level, entering a pass and then a very narrow single lane meandering all the way down to 6-700 meters level, over only 30 km. Very steep, very beutiful and very slow driving Thanks dad for the tip!
I possibly should have stayed overnight att Albarracin, but wanting to finalise the last stretch I continued. Only to be greeted by a 16 km absolutely straight road. After some 6 km there was a crossing and after another 4 km a small viaduct. Otherwise nothing. At all. Fascinating.
Now I'm safely arrived to the mediterranean, after a 3846 km ride. This is some 1000 km more than shortest route according to google. If you want to go short, don't detour via England. :-)
Here I'll spend some time with my parents, swimming the ocean, doing excursions and in general taking care of me and the bike. Of course there will also be some planning for the next stage, drawing up the details for Andalucia, which I'll probably enter in some 10 days or so.
Setting out from Nuevalos...

...and getting into the mountains again

Highlands, before next gorge

Gaining some altitude...
...to reach the top of Sierra de Albarracin

Small road with steep sides (pic doesn't tell the story here actually!)

Coming from the pine forrest...

...and continuing downwards

Suddenly the road got wide. Like regular one lane road wide...

End of day a well deserved beer in Alicante
